6 Weeks...Oktoberfest!!! 10/11-10/17

This week I went down to train with the Boob Crew.

It's the annual "Oktoberfest" walk where we walk from Santee to La Mesa and end up at the beer gardens. Laura met me there. We forgot cash, so no beer for us.

It was a long, hot, and did I mention LONG 15 miles with about 5 hills. Ugh. I was sure that she wanted to kill us that day! All felt better after lunch and hydration.

In the meantime, Laura found this uber-cute car parked on the street near by. Do you have a bra whisperer? LOL

Monday Rest
Tuesday 5 miles Easy walking
Wednesday 45 minutes Moderate cross-training
Thursday 6 miles Moderate walking
Friday 45 minutes Easy cross-training
Saturday 10 miles Easy walking
Sunday 6 miles Easy walking

Week 22...and counting down!

I walked around the Del Mar fair this weekend...okay, mostly to walk off the brisket, bloomin' onion, fudge and cookies I shared with my family while I was there!

I did go do a real walk this weekend! Shack called me up on Friday to check to see if I was coming on Saturday. A much needed hair appointment conflicted time-wise (I said goodbye to six inches!) but luckily, Bekki had planned a back to back walk Sunday morning. I really did drive 80 miles to walk with these folks for...4 miles.

It really is worth it to be a part of such an amazing team. I won't be up for it every weekend, but I'll be driving down more times than it's practical to this summer just to be encouraged on in my training and uplifted in my soul. This really is an amazing group of walkerss. I'm sure there are other great training groups, but I already have one that is like family. I can't quite picture, after two years, walking with anyone else!

And in other news...Laura and her mom went to the San Diego Race for the Cure workshop this weekend. They've named the 5K team "Judy's JUGgernauts"! I can't wait to walk with them in the beginning of November. It seems far away, but it won't be long until we're donning our shirts and hats to Walk for the Cure. Wonder what we'll be wearing for it!

Week 24 (and Counting Down!)

Week 24 (and counting!) ended with the official Komen kick off walk! Ahhh, it was in Encinitas! It was nice to have it near my part of the 'hood! I joined with some of Marcia's teammates at the New Balance store off of the Birmingham exit (just a mile or two from where Aunt Jil's condo was). New Balance did a great job with a shoe and clothing presentation. The presenter was informative but also pretty funny. I loved it when she talked about the process of picking shoes. "You can't just go into the store and say, that is the cutest shoe! I'm so going to wear it on the 3 day!" SO TRUE! I don't even want to think about finding new shoes to deal with my blister issue. I'm actually thinking about getting a pair of walking sandals! I've got to do something; what worked year 1 did NOT work year 2. I didn't want to admit it but I actually got a little blister on Bekki's walk...I hadn't slicked the toes up with body glide and it got hot out there the last half mile. Sweaty toes lead to blisters. :0(

The walk was a quick 3 miles along the coast. It was overcast but beautiful! I'd been more careful with my body glide, so no blisters!

Channel 8 is one of the sponsers for the 3 day. The channel 8 weatherman was there...for years, he's done his weather reports for the 3 day weekend down at the 3 day tent city while his co-worker, Barbara Lee, walked with the troops. This year, he's walking with us, too! Brave man He even showed up in pink...though Marcia speculated that perhaps he'd borrowed his wife's hoodie!

I am a little sad that you can't judge a walking shoe by it's cover...they had some pretty amazing shoes there!

6/5/10 Back in The Saddle--Pre Training Boob Crew Walk!

Training using the 24 week schedule officially begins this coming week. I started getting excited, finally really excited, when I thought about getting to be with the Boob Crew. They are some of the finest people I know and I'm honored to share in their journeys with them. I don't just walk for my family, I walk for their families and loved ones.

This first training walk was a short easy four miler (or was it 3?). Just around part of the lakes and back. It was great to have my long time WP Laura along as well as my friend Marcia from Foothills. I was so excited to see new faces amongst the familiar ones in the Crew...but while I was happy to see Bekki, Mike, Q, Donna, Terri...there were also several missing. Where in the heck was Tim? How can I train without him? LOL

It was just so good to be back with these amazing folks. Sadly, the walk wasn't just a kick off walk, it was a memorial walk. A member of "Bippity, Boppity Boobs", Sherri Wallace, had just lost her fight with breast cancer weeks ago. It's a sad reminder that it's a vicious battle we are fighting. She left behind two teenaged daughters and a husband. She's mourned and missed by us all.

Back in Training...Again

It's time to get blogging again! It's been nice to take some time off and just chill but the RNR marathon training group meets tomorrow for the first time and RNR training officially begins! I am actually a little nervous. Like the new school year is starting and I'm the new kid in town. I realize that most people won't know each other either, but I'm afraid they will kind of laugh at my desire to walk it...not run it.

In all honesty, half-marathoners, marathoners and ultra'ers (that's a made up word for people who do ultra marathons) have always treated me with respect. It's that whole, 'you get up and do it again and then do it all again a third time' deal that gets them. So why the apprehension?

Maybe it's my own nerves. When I first signed up for the 3 day, I never doubted my ability to be able to train up to a 3 day. There's a certain power that comes with a 12 hour limit (about the time that the sun shines during the day in November...the 3 day pretty much goes from sun up to sun down). But now I've got this seven hour deadline hanging over me. I mean, if I don't end up being able to do it, so be it. I guess it's just back to that "acceptance" I hope to find with with other people who are training for it, too.

Well, if some of them are as nervous as I am, I guess it will all work out. But training season means early to bed, early to rise. So it's time I turn in. Yikes! Wish me well for my 1st training walk tomorrow!

The First Step

I signed up to train with the West Coast Road Runners for the San Diego Rock N Roll Marathon next June!

Did I really just do that?!

I'll sign up for the marathon itself on the 13th...there's a discount for signing up on the 13th of each month...if I remember correctly, it's in celebration of the 13th anniversary of the marathon (or something like that!).

Wow, I've wanted to walk a marathon for at least a year...so now it's time to start making that desire a reality.

I wonder how early I'll be getting up on Saturdays now?!

Final Training Walk 11/14/09

It was really bittersweet to go on the last training walk of the season...exciting that the 3 day is so close, sad knowing that I won't see these folks regularly until next summer. The theme of the walk was "Why We Walk" ... we wore our team shirts or just fun costumes and you'd better believe ... Pink abounded!

Pink Pajama Walk!! 11/8/2009

It was so good to finally walk with the Boob Crew...after weeks of fighting an upper respiratory infection, I haven't been able to train but there was no way I was missing Bekki's Pink Pajama Party Walk. The outfits did NOT disappoint! I love this group of walkers, they make training so much fun! Check out some of our get ups!

Our men in pink! They all made it clear that they were dressed in pink for 3 day training LOL!

It's Not a Rumor--150 Days to Go!

I was looking at my page on the Komen site and it said that the walk is 150 days away...wow! Really?! I know that's about five months, but it will FLY by! I'm walking with the training group about once a week. I always try to go Saturdays since the week nights are hard. But it's nice to walk with other people and get to know members of the training team so I joined them last night. They are a really nice group of (mostly!) women. Afterwards, a small group of us ate at Denny's and chatted for a while. Of course, since it is mostly women, there's always a little "scoop" on something going on with someone or a favorite story of "stuff" from last year. I'm just glad that none of it is about me :0) LOL. It's not bad, you just know how women can talk...but you have the real news, 150 days to go! Kim is doing amazing work on the fundraising ideas up in Sacramento while she nurses a sore ankle. Our Fuddruckers fundraiser is less than a month away...stay tuned for the details!

Ten Miles!

I did ten miles on Saturday. Woohoo! Four at home with "Leslie" and another six plus at the Lake with my friend, Ang. I have to tell you, I could feel it the last couple of miles! I remember thinking as I got into my car..."and this is only half a day's walk in the three day!" Ugh, I remember THAT pain. It had been a while since I'd done more than six. I don't think I've walked more than six since the three day, actually. I'm still not too worried about long distances. There's plenty of time for that. But I won't walk more than a half marathon until at least mid-summer. I'm trying to focus on building speed in the lower distances. I'll start by going from walking four to six miles regularly to ten. I'll take it nice and slow, then move up to 13.1 (what can I say, I impress myself when I say, I just walked a half marathon!). And at some point, maybe I'll even give jogging a try. But it felt good to get out there and do some serious walking. Anyone else want to join me at the lake next time?

Our First Official Komen Event

Laura and I completed our first official "3 Day" training walk at the Susan G Komen San Diego kick-off event held on Saturday, June 7th! It was a short, 3 mile walk, but a good way to get a sense of the "3 day" spirit. Laura and I wore our pink caps and visors to contribute to that spirit. Established teams already wore their personalized team T-shirts. Ladies get pretty wild in their team names. A list of the registered teams on line include a lot of references to "ta-ta's" and "chi-chi's." We're planning on walking as "A Good Pair."

A employee of RoadRunner Sports held a brief, but very helpful, shoe clinic before the walk. RoadRunner Sports supports the Susan G Komen Foundation by offering a 10% discount to participants. They help you find the best shoe for you, and even video tape you walking on a treadmill to see what habits you have in walking (rolling your foot in as you step down, etc.) to figure out what kind of shoe is going to support you best. And, allow you to return your shoes (within two months of purchase) if you find they give you blisters or just don't fit comfortably. Because athletic shoes tend to run a little small, they also suggest you buy one size larger. They also suggest you own two pairs and alternate the pairs every time you walk.

MMHS c/o 93'er, Mary, had just given me the same tip on FaceBook when she found out I was walking in the 3 Day. She's already walked twice in previous years and has volunteered to help us with fundraising! Laura and I also bumped into another girl from our class at the practice walk. This girl stopped us and asked if we had gone to MMHS and realized we were all from c/o of '93!. Kim is walking with a '92 alum. Even though I work in Mira Mesa, I really don't run into people from our class very often so it's always a good feeling to find an old classmate. We had Kim take our picture to celebrate this first training walk. Many more pictures...and walks...will come. Thanks for joining Laura and I on our journey! We have a lot more miles to go!
